Trigger Happy Havoc – Complete Guide To Gifts

Trigger Happy Havoc – Complete Guide To Gifts

In the killing game of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, making friends is the last thing on certain characters’ minds. Protagonist Makoto Naegi, however, believes that it’s important to maintain bonds and trust. To that end, the player can build bonds between Makoto and his classmates, perhaps even forming deep friendships. These bonds can actually be important in-game, as they unlock abilities that players can employ during class trials.

In order to connect with his classmates and gain access to new skills, Makoto must not only spend time with them, but show some generosity through gifts. Each student has their own likes and dislikes, and since time together is limited in the killing game, there’s little room for trial and error. Here’s a guide to obtaining and giving gifts in the first Danganronpa game.

Mild spoilers ahead for Trigger Happy Havoc.

Updated September 22, 2025, by Demaris Oxman: The announcement of Danganronpa 2×2 has fans of the franchise buzzing, and many are already theorizing over what the game’s alternate plot might look like. Though the trailer didn’t reveal much, it got fans excited about the series again, especially since most didn’t expect another game. Though 2×2 isn’t due out until next year, plenty of players are picking up the games again to refresh their memories, starting with the first entry: Trigger Happy Havoc.

With the mystery at the forefront, some players tend to overlook the social aspect of the games, and don’t take advantage of Free Time. However, this is a mistake. By getting to know his classmates better, Makoto opens up new skills that can help him in the class trials, quite literally saving his life. Some of these skills are game-breaking, and can only be unlocked by giving presents to the right people.

15 Games To Play If You Love Danganronpa

Fans of Danganronpa have a wide range of other great games to try as well, with a similar atmosphere to the unique murder-mystery game.

How To Obtain Gifts

The player can obtain items to gift to their fellow students at the MonoMono Machine in the School Store. By putting in a Monocoin, players can obtain one item. The machine starts off with a 0% repeat chance; however, each time the player receives a new item, the chance of them getting an item they have received before increases. The player can put in additional Monocoins to lower the repeat chance; however, this does NOT increase the number of items they will receive. Makoto will only receive one item each time he pulls the lever.

Bear in mind that it’s not necessarily a negative thing to receive an item that Makoto has received before, as many students like the same gifts. In particular, there are two gifts which are Liked by all students in the school, and are thus among the best to obtain. These are the Hope’s Peak Ring and the Funplane.

Non-Giftable Items

Over the course of the game, players will find themselves coming into possession of items that, although they are part of the gift inventory, cannot be given as gifts to Makoto’s classmates. If the player tries to do so, they will get a notification telling them that their attempted gift is a “key item” and cannot be given away.

The first two non-giftable items unlock bonus scenes. Item 91, A Man’s Fantasy, has a chance to appear in the MonoMono Machine during Chapter 2. If Makoto has it in his inventory during Chapter 3, they’ll get to see a steamy bathhouse scene. Item 92, Escape Button, has a chance to drop from the MonoMono machine after the player has completed Chapter 6. This unlocks an alternate ending in the main menu.

At the end of each chapter, Makoto will obtain an item that serves as a memento of that chapter’s events, and often of the characters who died in that chapter. These items, numbered 93–100, cannot be gifted to NPCs. Similarly, after completing a classmate’s report card, Makoto will receive a (somewhat dubious) token of their friendship. These items, numbered 101–114, cannot be given as gifts either.

School Mode

Upon completing the main game, players can unlock School Mode, which takes place in an alternate version of the game where the killings aren’t happening. In between gathering materials to create backup Monokumas, players have plenty of time to spend getting to know their classmates. It essentially functions as a dating sim, giving players a chance to see Free Time Events that they missed out on during the main game.

This mode isn’t necessary, but it can be fun for players who want some additional context for their favorite characters, especially those who died early. Since it revolves around gaining favor and building friendships with other characters, presents are essential in this mode. All the gift preferences, and methods for obtaining them, remain the same.

Gift Preferences & Unlockable Skills

Each of Makoto’s classmates has a list of Loved gifts, and a list of Liked gifts. Following each character’s first Free Time Event (FTE), the player must present the character with a Liked or Loved gift each time they choose to spend some time with that person, in order to initiate the next Free Time Event and fill out the following page in that character’s Report Card.

Below, players can find a full list of each character’s Loved gifts. As the lists of Liked gifts are often much longer, a few are listed here, along with links to the Danganronpa wiki where players can find a full, detailed breakdown.
